Community Service | Sigma Lambda Gamma UCLASigma Lambda Gamma

317_24639593146_1550_nAs one of our principles, community service is our way to give back. We participate in the Los Angeles marathon every year alongside Sisters from our region as volunteers in order to keep runners hydrated and motivated. We also take the time to lend a hand at Midnight Mission, one of the oldest operating human service organizations in Los Angeles; the center is located in Skid Row with the mission of helping those in need. Midnight Mission is to be a “consistent beacon of light for those with no where else to turn.” As a Chapter, we volunteer at the shelter serving hundreds of homeless in downtown Los Angeles because it is our duty to uphold our principle both as a sorority and as individuals. During the academic year, we partner with the gentlemen of Sigma Lambda Beta Fraternity in order to gather warm winter clothes, sandwiches, and water for the less fortunate living in the Skid Row area of Los Angeles.

Community service takes many forms; another way we strive to uphold our values are through organizing blood drives here at UCLA. Our Sisters love to do community service whether it is as a chapter or on their own. This past summer a group of our sisters registered and participated in a 5K in order to raise awareness and encourage people to donate life at the annual Donate Life Run/Walk Family Festival; the mission of the annual event is to inform, honor, save lives, and strengthen families.

This festival has successfully registered 8,000,000 people who have agreed to donate their organs after passing so that they can help save lives. UCLA’s Annual Volunteer Day is another opportunity for students to participate in community service, and an event that our sorority has actively participated in. This past year, Sisters were sent to various schools in order to help mentor students and answer any questions they may have about college. Regardless of the type of community service event, our Sisters always seize these opportunities. Our service to others is a key component of understanding our community and the environment we are a part of. By helping others in our communities we not only empower ourselves, but we also help make the world a better place. We invite you to join us for our next community service event, please check our calendar and contact us directly for details.
